Houston City Council approved an ordinance requiring monthly public updates on specified city infrastructure projects on Oct. 28, 2026, the Houston Chronicle and Chron reported. Chron described the vote as unanimous.
The reported updates would cover city sidewalks, bike lanes, trails, parks, streets, drainage and wastewater projects. Each entry would include a projectโs location, council district, estimated cost and work description. When applicable, updates would explain delays, cancellations, redesigns or changes in scope.
Affected council members would receive separate notices: monthly notice of specified project changes and notice before work begins, including its scope.
How residents can track a project
Residents following work in their area can use a projectโs location and work description to help distinguish the relevant entry. The council district is also one of the reported fields. Comparing entries from month to month can show whether an estimated cost, description of the work or stated reason for a delay has changed.
A listed cost is an estimate, not the cityโs final spending total. The reporting requirement provides information and notice; it does not itself require construction to restart or guarantee that a project will be completed.
How the reporting proposal developed
Council Member Julian Ramirez told the Houston Chronicle that the proposal followed council membersโ complaints about insufficient information on planned projects. He said it began as an amendment during discussion of the 2025 Capital Improvement Plan and could help council members answer residentsโ questions.
The Chronicle reported that Council Member Joe Panzarella supported keeping residents informed about project planning, design and funding. Safe-streets advocate Ruben Garza called for updates to be readable and legible.
Houston Public Works Director Randy Macchi told the Chronicle he expected the first monthly report on Dec. 1, 2026. That is an expected date, not confirmation that a report has been published.
