Mayor Mike Morris reported that 78 Clovis homes had major damage from September flooding, according to NewsChannel 10. The report attributed the figure to Morris, rather than presenting it as a final damage tally.
Morris said FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security surveyed damage the previous week. He said city and state agencies would work toward a federal Individual Assistance disaster declaration, a process he estimated could take weeks to months. The report did not say whether a formal request had been filed or give a filing or decision date.
How the early damage figures compare
A City of Clovis update dated Sept. 25 described an early response to the Sept. 24 flooding. It reported 40 calls about stranded or disabled vehicles and flooding at five houses. Separately, the city said a Red Cross assessment indicated at least nine homes were affected.
Those figures are not a direct before-and-after comparison with the later 78-home count. The five-house figure describes houses reported with flooding, while the Red Cross figure refers to homes affected; both were early-response numbers. Morrisโs later figure specifically described homes with major damage.
NewsChannel 10 also reported that Morris said displaced residents were staying in hotels or with friends and relatives. He said some residents might still be in damaged homes he considered unsafe.
Federal aid remains unconfirmed
Has an Individual Assistance declaration been approved? NewsChannel 10 did not report an approval. Its account described officials as working toward a declaration, so it does not establish that federal assistance is secured.
The report said a local disaster recovery fund had been established at Bank of Clovis to accept donations. It also said residents should continue reporting damage.
