FDA Class I chip recall puts select Zapp’s and Dirty snacks on the July Fourth check list
FDA’s highest-risk recall covers select Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips nationwide, so shoppers should check labels before the holiday weekend. The FDA has classified the recall of certain Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips from Utz Quality Foods as a Class I, the agency’s highest-risk category, after a seasoning ingredient raised Salmonella concerns. The escalation came on June 24, just ahead of the July Fourth holiday rush.
What products are affected
This is a limited recall, not a companywide one. The FDA says the affected products were sold at retail stores nationwide and that no other Utz Quality Foods products are included. Affected items include select Bayou Blackened Ranch, Big Cheezy, Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion chips in specific sizes and batch codes.
Why the risk level matters
Under FDA definitions, a Class I recall means there is a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Utz said the seasoning batches tested negative before use and that no illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall.
What shoppers should do
Check the package name, size, best-by date, and batch code before serving chips from a July Fourth picnic or cookout. If you have a recalled bag, do not eat it; discard it or contact Utz customer care for refund information.
For holiday hosts, the practical takeaway is simple: scan the snack table now, not after guests arrive.
