Metairie gas watch: regular slips, diesel eases, both still above last week
AAA’s May 8 check shows Metairie-area regular and diesel prices easing a touch, but both are still above last week and well above year-ago levels.
Metairie drivers got a small bit of breathing room at the pump on May 8, but the latest AAA check still shows high fuel costs. The New Orleans metro average — the best available Metairie proxy — came in at $4.016 for regular gas, down from $4.023 yesterday and above $3.833 last week. Diesel averaged $5.160, down from $5.177 yesterday and above $5.127 a week ago.
Regular is also above the month-ago mark of $3.795 and the year-ago level of $2.720. Diesel is lower than its month-ago average of $5.365, but still above $3.155 a year ago. That split matters for commuters, contractors, delivery fleets, restaurants, landscapers and other small operators that burn fuel quickly.
Louisiana’s average is close to the metro reading at $4.028 for regular and $5.133 for diesel, while the national average is higher at $4.546 and $5.663. EIA’s latest gasoline and diesel fuel update was released May 5, 2026, giving this price move current federal timing context.
For households, the practical effect is simple: this is a small daily reprieve, not a reset. If you are filling up around Metairie before weekend travel or a work route, compare nearby pumps before topping off — and share the highest and lowest local prices you are seeing.
