Apply for SBA’s $6M Women’s Business Center modernization grants (deadline Aug. 10, 2026)
SBA opened a $6 million Women’s Business Center modernization competition for select states and territories. Applications close Aug. 10, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET).
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has opened a $6 million competition to modernize the Women’s Business Center (WBC) support network. The initiative is intended to expand coordinated, statewide or territory-wide business services in select places—so women entrepreneurs can access more consistent counseling, training, and wraparound support.
Important for applicants: SBA says the grants will be awarded to organizations based on the modernization locations listed in the official release, and the current WBC system is not being replaced—existing WBC awards continue.
What SBA announced on July 21, 2026
SBA announced a national, $6 million grant competition as part of a Women’s Business Center Modernization Initiative. SBA says it will establish State Lead Centers supported by local Service Centers in selected states and territories, creating a network aimed at small-business formation and growth.
SBA also says this competition is limited to applicants in the states/territories where existing WBC funding has not kept pace with women-entrepreneur growth: Florida, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Application deadline: August 10, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
How the program is structured (what “modernization” is meant to do)
Under the Lead Center model, the funded work is designed to deliver coordinated services across a larger geography, using:
- State Lead Centers to anchor the initiative, and
- Service Centers to support delivery as part of an integrated network.
SBA frames the goal as a more comprehensive statewide/territory-wide system—so resources can be aligned to the needs of local women entrepreneurs, rather than operating as disconnected programs.
Who can apply (eligibility basics from SBA)
SBA’s announcement lists the eligibility expectations for an applicant organization. In general, SBA says an eligible applicant must be an organization that:
- Provides services—especially technical support—to entrepreneurs
- Is organized and incorporated in the U.S. and remains in good standing in its state or territory of incorporation
- Is a private not-for-profit or non-profit corporation with an active 501(c) federal tax-exempt status certification with the IRS
- Has an internal financial management system that meets 2 CFR 200.302
Before you start an application, confirm every requirement in the official NOFO materials, since that document controls details like required forms and what SBA expects in the proposal.
Where to apply (and what to verify first)
The NOFO hub directs applicants to use the federal funding application process for this opportunity via Grants.gov. The SBA release and the NOFO materials also set the closing date and time.
Two practical “check first” items for applicants:
- It is a cooperative agreement under the opportunity materials.
- The NOFO indicates there is a cost-sharing or matching requirement, so organizations should verify what match documentation and terms apply.
What this could change for women-owned small businesses in 2026–2027
If awarded organizations build and coordinate the Lead/Service Center network as envisioned, women entrepreneurs in the modernization locations could see improved access to:
- Business counseling tailored to formation and growth needs
- Training and mentoring through a more connected service model
- Wraparound support that’s intended to work together across a larger geography
For Main Street operators, the practical takeaway is timing: this is a capacity-building funding window, and any new or upgraded services would depend on how the funded centers implement the integrated network after awards are made.
What to watch next
After the August 10, 2026 deadline, SBA will move into the review and award process described in the NOFO. For organizations and women-owned businesses tracking likely service changes, the next watch items are:
- SBA award decisions and implementation timelines
- NOFO-driven updates or clarifications tied to submission requirements and scoring
- New WBC network announcements from the organizations selected as Lead Centers (and their Service Center partners)
For applicants, the near-term action is straightforward: pull the full NOFO instructions now and map your proposal to the Lead Center / Service Center model, eligibility, and any matching requirements before time runs out.
