D.C. launches five-site cool-pavement pilot to reduce urban heat
The District Department of Transportation has launched a five-site pilot applying solar-reflective pavement coatings at Washington locations designated as urban heat islands.
DDOT announced the Cool Corridors pilot on July 27, 2026, and said installation work began during that week. The project is a limited pilot at five sites, not a confirmed permanent citywide program.
