Kenya confirms second Bundibugyo Ebola case in quarantined relative
Kenya confirmed a second Bundibugyo Ebola case on October 14 in a 39-year-old close relative of the first patient. The person developed symptoms on October 13 while already in quarantine and under daily monitoring, according to Kenyan reporting citing the Health Ministry.
Reporting said samples tested positive at the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the KEMRI-CDC laboratory, and the patient was receiving supportive care at a designated treatment centre. The ministry described the cases as linked and said there was no evidence of wider community spread at the time of its announcement.
As of October 13, authorities had identified 128 contacts linked to the first case and traced 113. Of those traced, 108 were in quarantine in Kenya and five were outside the country; tracing of the remaining 15 was ongoing. Contact tracing and monitoring were continuing. The first case was imported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo via Uganda, the World Health Organization reported.
