Modi Begins Central Asia Trip With Uzbekistan Visit and SCO Summit Ahead

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed India on August 29, 2026, for a four-day diplomatic trip that pairs a state visit to Uzbekistan with participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan.

The itinerary gives New Delhi two linked settings for pursuing its Central Asia priorities: bilateral talks on trade, investment and sector-by-sector cooperation, followed by a regional forum where India plans to emphasize security, connectivity and opportunity.

Talks with Uzbekistan’s president

Modi is scheduled to be in Tashkent on August 29 and 30 at the invitation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The two leaders are expected to hold delegation-level talks on strengthening the India-Uzbekistan strategic partnership.

India’s Press Information Bureau said the agenda includes trade and investment, defense, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties. The Uzbek president’s office also listed health care, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, chemicals, geology, mechanical engineering and other economic sectors.

The official descriptions confirm the agenda, not its results. At the time Modi began the trip, neither government source said that new trade, defense or energy agreements had already been completed.

Agreement package remains a planned outcome

The Uzbek presidential office said that a substantial package of bilateral agreements was planned following the meeting. That wording matters: the package was a prospective outcome as the visit began on August 29, not a completed deal.

For businesses and investors, the practical test will be whether documents released after the talks create implementable projects, clearer market access or defined cooperation mechanisms. India Today reported that pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, information technology, digital services and connectivity could offer room for expansion, while also noting that existing arrangements have not automatically produced comparable commercial results.

Bishkek summit will test India’s stated priorities

From Tashkent, Modi is scheduled to travel to Bishkek for the 26th SCO summit on August 31 and September 1. The summit marks the organisation’s 25th anniversary, and India has been a full member since 2017, according to the Indian government’s itinerary announcement.

India says Modi will present priorities built around security, connectivity and opportunity. His departure statement says he will work with fellow members for a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism. He is also scheduled to meet Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, hold bilateral meetings with other SCO leaders and attend the opening ceremony of the sixth World Nomad Games.

Reuters reporting carried by Business Recorder independently corroborated the August 29-September 1 travel sequence and the planned SCO attendance.

Why the sequence matters

The trip places economic diplomacy and multilateral security discussions in one sequence. In Tashkent, India is seeking practical cooperation in trade, energy, technology, health care and other sectors. In Bishkek, it will present its regional priorities in a forum that includes partners with different national interests and policy agendas.

Connectivity is likely to be especially important. Better transport, digital links and energy cooperation could support commercial ties between India and Central Asia, but progress will depend on detailed agreements, financing and implementation rather than announcements alone.

What to watch next

The key follow-up will be the documents issued after the Tashkent talks and the Bishkek summit. These could include signed bilateral agreements, joint statements, summit declarations and timelines or institutions responsible for carrying out commitments.

At the start of the trip, India had confirmed the itinerary and its stated priorities. The measurable significance will depend on whether the planned package produces concrete cooperation and whether the SCO discussions yield language or mechanisms that members can act on.
