Oxford Begins Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccine Trial as Outbreaks Hit Congo and Uganda
Researchers at the University of Oxford have vaccinated the first participant in a phase 1 clinical trial of a vaccine designed for Bundibugyo Ebola, opening human testing for a virus strain with no approved vaccine. The first dose was given in July 2026, 68 days after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public-health emergency of international concern, according to Nature.
The candidate, known as ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo Ebola, is being developed by the Oxford Vaccine Group for the strain driving outbreaks affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The milestone comes while health authorities and researchers are seeking a vaccine matched specifically to Bundibugyo ebolavirus rather than relying on products developed for other Ebola strains.
A first step into human testing
A phase 1 trial is an early stage of clinical development. The first vaccination shows that the candidate has moved from preclinical work into testing in people, but it does not establish that the vaccine is safe, effective or approved for use. No human effectiveness or immune-response results have been reported from this first dose.
The timing underscores the pressure created by the outbreak. Nature reported that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 3,200 confirmed cases and 1,405 deaths by July 27. Those figures were reported in connection with the outbreak and are not presented as a final World Health Organization tally.
For people in affected communities, the immediate significance is therefore limited but important: researchers have started testing a strain-specific candidate while the virus is circulating. The vaccination is not evidence that the outbreak is under control, and it does not yet provide a proven protective product.
WHO backs strain-specific research
The World Health Organization’s Technical Advisory Group on Candidate Vaccine Prioritization reviewed Bundibugyo vaccine candidates at meetings on May 19 and May 25, 2026. Its report examined available preclinical and clinical evidence, including Oxford’s ChAdOx1 platform and candidates from IAVI and related developers.
The advisory group recommended prioritizing homologous Bundibugyo-specific vaccines—candidates matched to the virus strain—and study strategies covering both pre-exposure and post-exposure use. That recommendation sets a research priority. It is not regulatory approval and is not a finding that any candidate has been shown to prevent disease in people.
Oxford is not the only group pursuing a vaccine for the strain. Researchers expected a Moderna mRNA candidate to enter clinical trials in August 2026. Separately, a study reported in Nature Biotechnology described an experimental mRNA vaccine that protected mice against three ebolavirus species, including Bundibugyo. That result came from animal testing and does not demonstrate a benefit in humans.
Planned testing in Uganda
The Oxford team aims to test its vaccine in outbreak settings in Uganda later in 2026. Such work could examine the candidate under the conditions in which a Bundibugyo vaccine would ultimately need to be used, but the planned study is not a completed trial or evidence of effectiveness.
The next steps for ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo Ebola are continued phase 1 testing, followed by the planned outbreak-setting work if it proceeds. Researchers will need to establish how participants respond to the vaccine and whether the candidate can advance through later-stage testing and regulatory review.
For now, Oxford’s first vaccination marks a transition from laboratory development to human trials during an active outbreak. The broader response remains focused on developing and evaluating vaccines matched to Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a strain for which no approved vaccine currently exists.
