Venice’s Golden Lion Goes to ‘Woman Unknown’

May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown won the Golden Lion for best film at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where the awards were announced during the closing ceremony on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The drama was produced across Denmark, Sweden and Latvia, and its lead actor, Mathilde Arcel, also won the Coppa Volpi for best actress.

The result puts a cross-border European production at the center of one of the world’s major film festivals. It also gives Woman Unknown a significant visibility boost at a time when it had not yet secured North American distribution, according to Associated Press reporting published after the awards.

What Venice awarded

The official festival record identifies Woman Unknown as the Golden Lion winner and Arcel as the best-actress recipient. The same record shows the international range of the competition’s major honors.

Lee Chang-dong’s South Korean film Possible Love won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Ilya Khrzhanovsky received the Silver Lion for best director for Dau, a Germany-France-Sweden production. France’s A Good Little Soldier won the screenplay award, the British documentary NAZA received the Special Jury Prize, and House of the Wind, a production involving Cameroon, France, Belgium, Benin, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, won a major award in the Orizzonti section and the Lion of the Future for a debut film.

What the winning film is about

Woman Unknown is set in Denmark shortly after the end of the Nazi occupation. It centers on a young nanny and housemaid who is preparing to marry her wealthy employer when a past intimate relationship with a German soldier threatens her reputation and future, according to AP and Le Monde’s accounts of the film.

That postwar story is separate from the wider political themes associated with other films in the awards slate. Reporting from AP and Le Monde described individual works engaging with labor, Gaza, Ukraine, war and authoritarianism; those subjects should not be treated as a formal institutional position by the festival or as a description of Woman Unknown beyond its own plot and themes.

A politically engaged international slate

Le Monde described the edition as politically charged and highlighted the international character of the winning films. AP reported that Possible Love addressed the weakening meaning of labor and fraying human connections, while NAZA received recognition for its documentary treatment of the Gaza war. Khrzhanovsky dedicated his directing prize to Ukrainians, according to AP.

The results also renewed attention to gender representation. Le Monde reported that only two of the 21 competition films were directed or co-directed by women. AP reported that el-Toukhy was the only woman to have solely directed a main-competition film this year. Those figures provide context for her Golden Lion, but they do not by themselves establish a broader change in the industry.

Why the award matters beyond Venice

For international filmmakers, a major festival prize can raise visibility with critics, sales agents, distributors and awards-season voters. It may strengthen interest in acquiring a film and help a production made across several countries reach audiences beyond its original festival circuit.

Recognition is not a guarantee of release, however. At the time of the AP report, Woman Unknown did not have North American distribution. U.S. and Canadian viewers therefore should not assume that the Golden Lion winner is already available in local theaters or on streaming services.

The next practical question is whether a North American distributor acquires the film and, if so, whether it receives a theatrical, streaming or awards-season rollout. Venice has established Woman Unknown as one of the most visible international festival winners of the year, but its route to wider audiences remained unresolved as of September 14, 2026.
