Zambia Enters Final Campaign Days Before Aug. 13 Presidential and Legislative Election
Zambia is entering the final days of campaigning before a nationwide general election on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026. Voting is scheduled from 06:00 to 18:00, with President Hakainde Hichilema seeking re-election and voters also choosing representatives for the National Assembly and local government.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia’s timetable sets Aug. 12 as the final day of campaigning. The following day, voters will take part in several contests held on the same polling date, including the presidential election, National Assembly elections, mayoral races, council-chairperson contests and council elections.
The result will determine whether Hichilema remains president for a second term. It will also determine the composition of Zambia’s legislature and local councils, linking the national leadership contest to decisions about representation and administration at the local level.
A nationwide vote with multiple contests
The Electoral Commission has published official notices concerning validly nominated candidates for the 2026 elections. Those notices form part of the formal preparation for a vote that will cover national and local offices across Zambia.
For voters, the Aug. 13 schedule means that the presidential decision will be made alongside choices about members of the National Assembly, mayors, council chairpersons and council members. The election therefore has consequences beyond the presidency: the results will establish who represents voters in Parliament and in councils during the next term.
Hichilema’s campaign is already formally under way. Zambia’s State House says the president launched his 2026 re-election campaign in Lusaka in connection with the Aug. 13 general election.
The election is expected to shape Zambia’s economic and regional policy direction. It will also test the country’s democratic institutions as voters select national and local leaders in a single election cycle. The outcome is not yet available because polling has not taken place.
SADC prepares observers across all 10 provinces
The Southern African Development Community, or SADC, is preparing an electoral observation mission for the election. The regional bloc says the mission will be deployed across all 10 provinces, giving it a presence beyond the capital during the national vote.
SADC scheduled the official launch of its observation mission for Aug. 6. Following the launch, observers are expected to engage with election officials, political parties, civil society groups, academics and diplomatic representatives.
Those planned engagements place the mission in contact with several groups involved in the election process. Its work will include observing the broader electoral environment across the provinces, while the Electoral Commission remains responsible for the official administration of polling and the publication of election notices.
What happens next
The immediate timetable is clear. Campaigning continues through Aug. 12, the SADC observation mission’s official launch is scheduled for Aug. 6, and polling is set for Aug. 13 from 06:00 to 18:00.
The Electoral Commission identifies Aug. 13 as the first-ballot polling date. Voters will then cast ballots in the presidential, National Assembly and local government contests identified for the 2026 general election.
The combined vote will decide Zambia’s next president while also setting the balance of representation in the National Assembly and councils. SADC’s deployment across all 10 provinces adds a regional observation presence to an election whose consequences will be felt at national and local levels.
