Erie County says its $1.8 million Sharp Street Bridge project in Springville is complete. The countyโs Department of Public Works Highways Division announced the completion on Oct. 23, 2026. The Sharp Street Bridge project in Springville, New York, replaces a bridge the county said was built in 1929.
From a two-span bridge to a single span
The former structure was a two-span concrete slab bridge. The county says it has been replaced by a single-span prestressed concrete slab bridge with an increased span. That is a change in the bridgeโs configuration, not simply a repair to the old structure.
The county said the former bridge was rated โ3โ in 2025 and had deteriorating concrete, particularly along its fascias. Before replacement, temporary concrete barriers stood on both sides, and a steel plate covered a hole in the deck. The county did not explain the rating scale, so the number alone does not establish a specific condition category.
The approach road and trail crossing also changed
The project removed an S-curve south of the bridge and realigned the Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail crossing so it meets the road perpendicularly. The county said the revised road layout is easier to drive and plow, and described the trail-crossing change as a safety improvement. Those are the countyโs stated benefits; it did not report measured safety results.
For drivers and trail users, the project changed more than the bridge itself: the roadโs curve was removed and the crossing was repositioned. County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz also described the roadway as safer and easier to plow. Springville is in southern Erie County, according to the village.
Union Concrete and Construction Corp. was the contractor, and GPI was the design engineer, the county said. Its Oct. 23 completion announcement did not state when the bridge opened to traffic.
