Albany school-zone speed cameras resume; citations begin Aug. 13
Albanyโs school-zone speed cameras resumed operation Monday, August 3, but drivers remain in a warning period before qualifying civil citations can begin.
Warnings run through Wednesday, August 12. Beginning Thursday, August 13, a qualifying violation may result in a civil citation at one of nine monitored locations near Albany schools, according to the City of Albany and Albany Police Department information reported by WALB.
What can trigger a citation
The city says a notice of violation may be issued when a vehicle is traveling more than 10 mph over the applicable school-zone speed limit or regularly posted speed limit during a designated school-session enforcement period.
The listed periods include the hour before school through the hour after school during a regularly scheduled school session, as well as the entirety of a regularly scheduled school session.
That means the programโs documented threshold is not simply any speed above the posted limit. The vehicle must be traveling more than 10 mph over the applicable limit, and the alleged violation must occur during one of the designated enforcement periods.
What the cameras record
The city says the system uses radar equipment to monitor speeds as traffic approaches and passes the detection area. When the system captures a possible violation, it records the vehicleโs speed, date, time and location on the digital image. The city also says images of the vehicle and a close-up of the license plate appear with a citation.
Albany Police Department reviews each incident before issuing a citation, according to the cityโs school-zone camera information page.
Where the program applies
Albanyโs program covers nine monitored locations near city schools. Drivers should follow the applicable posted speed limit and pay attention to school-zone signs, flashing signals and school-session timing in each area.
The cityโs school-zone camera information page provides program details and directs drivers to the violation lookup system and RedSpeed contact information for citation questions.
Key dates for drivers
The cameras returned to operation on August 3, 2026. The warning period ends August 12, 2026. Qualifying civil citations can begin Thursday, August 13, 2026.
Drivers can review the City of Albanyโs school-zone camera information page for the programโs monitored locations, enforcement rules and citation-lookup information.
