Alhambra zoning changes set for August 24 council vote
Alhambra City Council has advanced a package of zoning and General Plan changes that could alter development rules across the city, including how the West Main corridor is treated. The zoning ordinance is scheduled to return to the council for a second reading and possible adoption on August 24, 2026.
The action remains preliminary for the zoning ordinance. The city’s current council agenda says the council introduced Ordinance O2M26-4869 at first reading. That means the ordinance has moved forward in the legislative process but has not yet been finally adopted.
What the proposed zoning ordinance would change
Ordinance O2M26-4869 would update Alhambra’s citywide objective design standards. These are the rules used to evaluate physical aspects of development under objective criteria.
The proposal would also eliminate the West Main Corridor Master Plan overlay district. An overlay district adds or modifies land-use rules within a defined area. Removing this overlay could change the way future proposals along West Main are reviewed, although the accessible city agenda does not specify the parcel-level effects.

The General Plan is the city’s broad policy framework for land use. Changes to its text and map can establish or revise the policy direction used for future planning decisions. In this case, the approved agenda materials show that the resolutions were adopted, while the related zoning ordinance still requires a second reading and adoption step.
