Austell sewer overflow sent 2,180 gallons into Concord Creek, county says
Austell, GA – Cobb County says a May 17 sewer overflow near Peel Castle Lane sent an estimated 2,180 gallons into Concord Creek before cleanup.
Cobb County says a sewer overflow in Austell released an estimated 2,180 gallons of wastewater into Concord Creek on May 17, 2026.
The county’s notice places the incident at 914 Peel Castle Ln. It says the Water System was notified at 10:22 a.m. and the overflow was stopped at 1:40 p.m. Crews then used a jet machine to clear the spilling manhole, removed solids and debris, and spread lime around the affected area.
The county’s CMOM log lists the same Austell event as a discharge into Concord Creek. In the notice, crews said wastewater was flowing around cracks in the cone and along a path to the creek. They also reported finding gray water and rags near the spill site and said they did not observe any fish kills while on site.
That matters locally because Austell’s Water Division says the city serves about 3,300 customers and collects wastewater within its water and sewer service area before feeding it into the county system for treatment. For residents near the spill, this was part of the sewer network serving the area every day, not just an internal utility report.
Why sewer overflows matter
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says sanitary sewer overflows can contaminate waters, create serious water-quality problems, back up into homes, and threaten public health. EPA also says SSOs can happen because of blockages, line breaks, sewer defects, power failures, improper design, or vandalism.
For Austell residents near Concord Creek, the key point is simple: the county says the overflow was stopped the same day and cleanup followed, but any discharge into a creek is worth attention for possible follow-up notices or monitoring.
