Students walk out to protest immigration enforcement

On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of Avon High School students walked out of class to protest increased immigration enforcement activity in Indiana. The demonstration began during a passing period and continued through the end of the school day as students circled the campus together.

Students carried signs, chanted, and gathered around the flagpole for speeches, calling attention to how federal immigration actions affect classmates, neighbors, and families in Avon. Organizers emphasized that the walkout was meant to be peaceful and student-led, and participants largely stayed on school grounds while expressing their views.

The demonstration drew regional television crews and has sparked ongoing conversations among students, staff, and parents about how the community supports immigrant families and responds to national policy decisions close to home.

This weekend on stage: “These Shining Lives”

Avon High School’s winter studio play, “These Shining Lives,” continues its run this weekend in the school’s Black Box Studio. The play, based on a true story, follows women working in a 1920s watch factory and the consequences they face after being exposed to unsafe conditions.

Performances are scheduled for Saturday evening and a Sunday matinee, with limited seating due to the intimate venue. School officials note that the show deals with mature themes and is best suited for teens and adults rather than young children.

Recreation and school events around town

For residents looking to stay active, the town’s recreation calendar features drop-in pickleball tonight at the Avon Elementary School gym. The session welcomes players of all skill levels, with a small fee at the door and a rotating format so everyone gets court time.

Families can also look ahead to a busy month in the schools. Avon Middle School South continues its musical performances this weekend, and several elementary schools are preparing spring picture days and grade-level music programs later in February.

Looking a bit further out, the parks department is already promoting this summer’s Night at the Park celebration at Town Hall Park, with a concert, family activities, and more. Volunteers and vendors are being recruited now to help make the annual event one of the community’s biggest gatherings of the year.
