Baltimore Daily Local Headlines: Detours, Investigations, and a Wintry Mix Ahead
Baltimore, MD – March 1, 2026 – Harford Rd closure for water-main work, a deadly East Baltimore shooting, CIAA traffic shifts, and a wintry mix ahead.
Top local headlines for Sunday
Baltimore’s Sunday start comes with a mix of public-safety updates, street-level detours, and a heads-up on messy weather early this week.
Public safety
- Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting reported Saturday morning in the 1500 block of Ashland Avenue in East Baltimore. Police and transit officers worked the scene as investigators gathered evidence, and more details are expected as the case develops.
- Police also announced the arrest of a 15-year-old described as a repeat offender after officers responded to a call for disorderly behavior on Liberty Heights Avenue and recovered a handgun during a search. The teen was taken to juvenile booking and detained, according to officials.
Traffic and closures
Drivers in Northeast Baltimore faced a major pinch point Sunday: Harford Road at 25th Street was scheduled to close starting around 8:30 a.m. for water main repairs, with multiple detours posted around the intersection. Officials said the closure could last through the day while repairs are completed.
Downtown, transportation officials warned of heavier-than-usual congestion tied to CIAA weekend activity and timed lane closures near the arena area, plus separate roadway-cleaning lane restrictions on key corridors.
Looking ahead to overnight travel, bridge-joint work is set to begin on westbound I-70 over the Patapsco River near the Baltimore-Howard county line. Two right lanes are expected to be closed starting Sunday night, with overnight work continuing on subsequent nights through the week, weather permitting.
City planning: early look at the next capital plan
City planners are also sketching out the next six-year capital blueprint, which includes proposals ranging from sanitation and facility upgrades to sidewalk work and other neighborhood infrastructure. The goal, officials said in recent briefings, is to plan projects more consistently across the full six-year window instead of restarting each year.
Weather watch
Forecasters say colder air has pushed back in to start March, and a wintry mix is possible Monday night into Tuesday morning. Even light icing or a brief snow-to-rain changeover could complicate the Tuesday commute, especially on untreated sidewalks and bridges.
