Severe Winter Conditions Prompt Extended Code Blue Alert

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor has extended the Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert through Sunday, February 1, due to continued single-digit temperatures and hazardous conditions across the city. Forecasts indicate subzero wind chills and icy road conditions, posing serious risks to public health and safety. During this alert, emergency shelters are expanded, and additional outreach efforts are activated to protect residents experiencing homelessness and the city’s most vulnerable residents impacted by extreme cold temperatures. Mayor Brandon M. Scott emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to pay attention to weather warnings, utilize warming centers if needed, and look out for one another.

Uncertainty Surrounds Maryland Cycling Classic 2026

The status of the 2026 Maryland Cycling Classic remains uncertain following organizational and logistical upheaval. The race is currently listed as a three-day UCI ProSeries event for men and a 2.1 event for women, scheduled for September 5–7 in Baltimore. However, there are doubts over whether it will proceed as scheduled, be reduced to a one-day event, or postponed altogether. A reported miscommunication between organizers and the UCI has added confusion, compounded by the recent departure of Sport Corp’s president Terry Hasseltine and the vacancy of all six staff positions at the non-profit. Race Director Steve Brunner emphasized that decisions are pending involvement from state and city officials. Clarity on the event’s fate is expected in the coming weeks.

City Implements Winter Storm Management Measures

In response to the ongoing winter storm, the City of Baltimore has implemented several measures to ensure public safety. The State of Emergency declaration remains in effect, and Phase II of the Snow Emergency Plan has ended, allowing residents to resume parking along designated snow emergency routes. Phase I of the Snow Emergency Plan remains in effect. The city is closely monitoring the potential for another winter storm this coming weekend in coordination with the National Weather Service. At this time, the probability remains low. The city is continuing to assess conditions and will share updates as more information becomes available.
