Officer injured in hammer attack returns to duty

A Barberton police officer who was struck in the head with a hammer during a domestic violence call on Charles Avenue earlier this week is back on the job. The incident happened around daybreak on February 2, when officers responded to a report of a man allegedly drinking all night, damaging property and threatening others inside the home.

Police say the officer was hit while entering a bedroom but was able to back out as colleagues used a Taser to subdue the suspect. The officer was treated at Summa Barberton Hospital and released the same day, and has since been cleared to return to full duty. A 34-year-old man faces multiple felony counts, including felonious assault and domestic violence. The case will move through the Summit County court system in the weeks ahead.

Local employers expand hiring in Barberton

One of Barberton’s major industrial employers has posted a wave of new openings in the city over the past two days, signaling continued demand for skilled workers. Recent listings include positions such as machining shift supervisor, thermal and hydraulic design engineer, timekeeping and accounting roles, and shop floor quality leadership.
