Belvidere Daily Briefing: Schools, Leadership, and City Meetings

Belvidere, IL — February 7, 2026 — School upgrades advance, a new leadership academy launches, and City Hall readies a busy week of meetings and public input.

Belvidere is waking up to a weekend focused on schools, leadership, and city business, with several decisions and programs taking shape.

School board studies long-term building plan

Belvidere School District 100 reviewed the first phase of its facility master plan this week, covering upgrades for every school in the district.

The initial projects emphasized new HVAC systems at Washington Elementary and South Middle School, along with investments at Perry Elementary.

Parents and staff from Perry attended to share concerns about the school’s long-term future, recalling earlier talks about a possible closure.

District leaders said they will poll the community on priorities before final approvals, aiming to balance student needs with the district’s finances.

Leadership Academy kicks off new class

The Belvidere Area Leadership Academy opened its 2026 program on Thursday, bringing together emerging leaders from across Boone County.

The eight-month, chamber-run series meets once a month and mixes local history, government, business, and civic topics with site visits and guest speakers.

Participants are expected to complete a group project and volunteer hours, with the goal of building skills and deeper connections to the community.

Tuition for chamber members covers materials and sessions, and this year’s class reflects a range of ages, industries, and experience levels.

City Hall prepares for busy meeting week

At City Hall, officials have posted fresh notices ahead of several meetings in the coming days, including a Committee of the Whole session on February 9.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meeting for February 10 has been canceled, but notices are up for both the firefighters’ and police pension board meetings on February 13.

Residents can review meeting packets and recent public notices, including water-permit information, through the city’s website or by contacting staff.

With school facilities, leadership development, and local government all in motion, the next few weeks will shape key pieces of Belvidere’s near future.
