Boston Daily Brief: Roxbury Fire, Slippery Roads, and Weekend Street Closures
Boston, MA – March 6, 2026 – Roxbury fire displaces residents, slick roads linger, and traffic advisories preview weekend events plus city updates.
Early Friday, a two-alarm fire tore through a three-story home in Roxbury, sending heavy smoke from the rear of the building and flames up through the second floor and roofline. Fire officials said four people were displaced and no injuries were reported. Crews stayed on scene to monitor for hot spots as rain and near-freezing temperatures made conditions tougher for both firefighters and residents.
Weather: slick spots into the morning
A messy mix of rain, sleet, and pockets of ice made for a slow commute around Greater Boston. Forecast guidance called for precipitation tapering off by early morning, but lingering drizzle and falling temperatures can refreeze wet pavement. If you are walking or driving today, expect isolated slick patches on untreated side streets, bridges, and shaded sidewalks.
Road closures: weekend reenactment and parade planning
The city issued a traffic advisory ahead of a Knox Trail reenactment scheduled for Saturday afternoon, featuring a rolling rally-style procession that travels from the Fenway area through Mission Hill and into Roxbury. Temporary parking restrictions are expected along the route. The advisory also previews the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Road Race on Sunday, March 15, which will use the traditional South Boston route in reverse and will close streets to through-traffic during the event.
City notes: trees and pets
- Boston announced more than $519,000 in Tree Planting and Care grants for six community projects, aimed at expanding and maintaining the urban canopy on privately owned land.
- Dog owners are reminded that annual licensing is required and the city says the 2026 deadline is March 31.
