Police in Brooklyn Center said officers shot a man late Wednesday night after responding to a domestic disturbance on the 3200 block of 63rd Avenue North. Investigators said the call began around 10:30 p.m. with a report that someone inside a home was armed with knives, and crisis negotiators were brought in during the standoff.
Police said the man later came out of the residence holding a chainsaw. Officers tried less-lethal options, then fired their weapons. The man was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition. The incident is under outside investigation, and the involved officers were placed on critical-incident leave.
Schools & families
Brooklyn Center Community Schools announced changes to its child care programming for next school year, citing budget pressures. The district said it will permanently close Centaur Beginnings at the end of the school year, with the final day of care scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2026.
The program serves children ages 6 weeks to 33 months. The district said some families may be eligible for summer care through Centaur Plus, and children who meet age cutoffs may transition into preschool in the fall.
Roads & getting around
If you’re driving across the north metro this weekend, plan extra time. Transportation officials said eastbound I-694 is closed from Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center to Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills, beginning late Friday night and lasting through early Monday morning. A posted detour routes traffic via Highway 169, Highway 610, Highway 10, and I-35W.
Regional reminder: a separate weekend closure is also planned on I-94 in St. Paul for bridge work, which could add pressure to alternate routes across the metro.
