Burlington Daily Brief: Roads, Grants, and Civic Academy Updates
Burlington, IA — February 7, 2026 — City road changes, civic academy signups, and grant opportunities headline a calm but busy winter weekend downtown.
Road changes near Edward Stone Middle School
The city has removed the school speed zone on Mason Road in the 2700–3000 blocks by Edward Stone Middle School. Drivers should now follow the regular posted limit through that stretch as the change takes effect.
City programs and public input
Applications are open for the city’s Citizen’s Academy, a short course that walks residents through how departments operate, from public safety and public works to parks and finance. It offers people who live or work in Burlington a chance to meet staff, tour facilities, and see how budget and policy decisions are made.
City staff are also asking for feedback on the future of the Dankwardt Park Pool. An online survey is gathering input for a feasibility study that will look at long term aquatic needs, including whether to renovate, replace, or reconfigure pool facilities.
Street closure and county events
Garibaldi Street remains closed between Gnahn Street and Lincoln Street on the west side for ongoing infrastructure work, while through traffic on Lincoln and Gnahn stays open. Drivers who usually cut through on Garibaldi should allow a few extra minutes and follow the posted detours until crews finish the project.
On the county calendar, outdoor programs are lined up at Starr’s Cave and Big Hollow later this month, including evening owl walks and a winter field day. Registration details, times, and any weather-related updates are listed on the Des Moines County events calendar.
Grants, plant closure, and school construction
The Community Foundation of Des Moines County is accepting applications for its spring grant cycle, with local nonprofits able to seek awards from five hundred to five thousand dollars for projects in Burlington and surrounding towns. The deadline is early March, giving organizations time to finalize proposals.
Residents are also watching two longer running storylines. More than two hundred workers at the CNH Industrial plant in Burlington are slated to lose their jobs this spring as the company closes the local backhoe factory and shifts production elsewhere, and community leaders continue to talk about how to support affected families. Meanwhile, the Burlington Community School District is preparing to break ground in March on a new performing arts center at the intermediate school campus, a multimillion dollar upgrade that will eventually give band, choir, orchestra, and theater students a larger, more modern home.
