Cambridge, MA — February 5, 2026 — Recent developments in Cambridge include zoning reforms, affordable housing initiatives, and community events.
City Council Approves Zoning Reforms
The Cambridge City Council has voted 8-1 in favor of zoning reforms aimed at encouraging more housing construction and higher density. The new regulations allow developers to build up to four stories citywide and up to six stories on lots greater than 5,000 square feet. These changes are projected to add 1,195 new housing units by 2030, including 220 affordable units, with numbers increasing by 2040. The reforms also permit homeowners to divide larger homes, promoting middle-density development to support a growing population at a reasonable pace.
City Acquires Site for Affordable Housing
The Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA), with financial support from the City of Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust (AHT), has successfully purchased 31-37 Mellen Street from Lesley University. The site is slated to be developed into affordable housing designed for families, contributing to the city’s ongoing efforts to address housing affordability.
Winter Mix Series Brings Community Together
Cambridge is embracing the winter season with a new series of free community events called Winter Mix. Designed to foster warmth, joy, and connection during the coldest part of the year, these events feature warm food, hot chocolate, winter games, performances, and festive activities. Themed outdoor events are scheduled every Thursday during February, with indoor pop-ups on Saturdays February 7, 14, and 28. Residents are encouraged to participate and shake off the winter blues.
City Seeks Members for Various Commissions
The City of Cambridge is seeking community members to fill vacancies on several commissions, including the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committees, Human Rights Commission, and Open Data Review Board. Residents interested in contributing to these important community bodies are encouraged to apply.
Upcoming City Budget Walk Through
In February, the City Budget Office will host two community engagement events to help residents understand how the city’s budget works, how community input shapes budget decisions, and how the community can meaningfully participate in the budget process. These sessions aim to provide transparency and encourage public involvement in the city’s financial planning.
