Carson City Timber Mill Receives $50 Million USDA-Backed Expansion Financing
Tahoe Forest Products LLC is set to access $50 million in USDA-guaranteed loan financing for equipment and facility upgrades at its Carson City timber operation, supporting a planned shift toward finished lumber and expanded processing capacity.
USDA Rural Development announced the financing on July 23, 2026. The financing comes through a partnership with MapleMark Bank and USDA loan-guarantee programs, making it lending support for the planned expansion rather than a direct federal grant or cash award.
Planned equipment upgrades
The announced project includes kilns, a planer mill and a new saw line. USDA said the equipment would help Tahoe Forest Products shift from rough-lumber production toward finished lumber suitable for retail distributors and large construction markets.
USDA also said the expansion would add 60,000 MBF of premium-lumber capacity. MBF means thousand board feet. That figure is an agency estimate tied to the planned project; it does not mean the additional capacity is already operating.
South Carson City operation
Carson Now reported that the mill is a 40-acre operation in south Carson City on Washoe Tribal Land, behind the Topsy Lane shopping center. The local report said work on the sawmill began in 2022 and that operations later stopped for retooling and machinery upgrades.
Those earlier upgrades are separate from the newly announced financing-supported improvements. The USDA announcement identifies the equipment and production goals, but it does not establish that construction or installation has been completed.
What the project could mean locally
A larger finished-lumber operation could increase industrial activity in Carson City as equipment is installed and production changes. The project could also affect employment, truck traffic, utility demand and activity around the industrial site, but the available announcements do not provide a final construction schedule, a permanent job total or a projected local tax impact.
The financing announcement also does not specify when the expanded operation will be complete or when the additional capacity will be fully available. Those details will matter to residents, local officials, nearby landowners and workers watching the site’s next phase.
What to watch next
The next concrete indicators will be equipment installation, facility work, any required local permits or approvals, changes in staffing and changes in truck or utility activity at the south Carson City site. For now, the $50 million announcement should be understood as federally guaranteed financing for a planned expansion—not proof that the project is complete or that a specific number of new local jobs has been created.
