Centerburg advances 56-acre Croton Road annexation as school-capacity questions grow

Centerburg Village Council approved filing a petition to annex 56 acres on Croton Road, advancing a municipal expansion that has drawn attention from residents, county officials, trail representatives and school leaders.

The action, approved March 3, 2026, moves the property into the annexation process but does not complete the annexation. The matter involves the Knox County Board of Commissioners, whose role is part of the next stage of the process.

Development questions are driving the discussion

The Croton Road proposal has become part of broader conversations about development in and around Centerburg. Residents attended a special village meeting on Jan. 19 to discuss proposed development, reflecting questions about how additional growth could affect the community.

Annexation can expand Centerburg’s municipal footprint and create room for a future tax base. It can also increase demands on roads, utilities, trails and public facilities. The public discussion so far has not established a final development plan, the number or type of homes that could be built, or a timetable for construction on the 56 acres.

In connection with the Croton Road matter, the Heart of Ohio Trail board committed $30,000, while Knox County commissioners committed $50,000. The commitments add county and trail interests to a discussion that otherwise centers on the village’s proposed boundary change.

Schools are part of the growth conversation

School capacity became a separate but related concern at a Centerburg Village Council meeting on April 6. Centerburg Superintendent Ryan Gallwitz discussed whether district buildings could accommodate additional growth and addressed the connection between housing development and demographic patterns.

That discussion raised a practical question for families and local officials: whether future development would bring enough students to require changes in how school facilities are used. The district’s public information does not establish a quantified capacity deficit, and the annexation should not be treated as proof that Centerburg schools are already over capacity.

Centerburg Local Schools has also posted a deadline affecting current students. Fall-sport students must have a current physical on file by Aug. 1, 2026.
