Christiansburg Daily: Rec Center Packed, South Franklin Work Wraps Up
Christiansburg, VA — February 7, 2026 — AAU hoops pack the Recreation Center today as town crews wrap up South Franklin sewer work and winter events ramp up.
Today in Christiansburg
It is a busy winter Saturday around town, with youth sports filling local gyms and the community looking ahead to a full slate of meetings and events next week.
AAU tournament fills Recreation Center
The Christiansburg Recreation Center is booked out today for an AAU basketball tournament, with Courts A through D and multiple rooms reserved from early morning into the evening. The tournament means extra traffic around the facility and fewer drop-in opportunities for casual play, so residents are encouraged to plan workouts and open gym time for another day.
Parks and Recreation staff note that tournament weekends help bring visitors into town during the slower winter months, supporting hotels, restaurants, and small businesses along North and Depot streets.
South Franklin sewer work winds down
After several days of intermittent lane closures on South Franklin Street for sanitary sewer rehabilitation, work is scheduled to wrap up following Friday’s final daytime shift. Drivers may still see crews picking up equipment or completing minor restoration, but the heaviest traffic impacts should now be over.
Anyone traveling through the corridor is still urged to watch for workers near the roadway and to observe any remaining cones or flagger directions as the project is buttoned up.
Winter events and sign-ups
Looking ahead, the town is promoting its indoor Winter Beach Blast on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Recreation Center, offering live music, food, and beach-themed games as a midseason warmup. The event will temporarily close the basketball courts, track, and some recreation facilities that evening, so regular users may want to adjust schedules.
Parks and Recreation is also continuing sign-ups for youth spring baseball and softball, with registration available in person at the Recreation Center or by phone. Youth volleyball registration closed Feb. 6, but late sign-ups may be placed on a waiting list if team space opens.
Civic calendar next week
After weather disruptions earlier this month, Christiansburg is settling back into its regular public meeting rhythm. Town Council will meet Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, at Town Hall, followed by a Public Arts Advisory Board session on Wednesday and a Board of Building, Fire, and Property Maintenance Code Appeals meeting on Thursday.
Residents can attend in person or follow along via the town’s streaming and agenda resources, and are encouraged to use upcoming meetings to raise neighborhood concerns, learn about street projects, and stay engaged with budget and planning discussions.
