Cleveland and CMSD RFQ to reuse 12 closed school sites: responses due July 20
Cleveland OH – City and CMSD extended the deadline for developers to respond to an RFQ for reusing 12 closed school sites to July 20, 2026.
Cleveland and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) are moving a key step in their school-building reuse pipeline. The City’s procurement/redevelopment materials for the 2026 CMSD School Sites RFQ now list a submission deadline of no later than July 20, 2026—replacing the June 30 date originally set in the RFQ PDF.
This RFQ is asking qualified development teams to submit qualifications and project visions for adaptive reuse and/or redevelopment of 12 former CMSD school properties. The RFQ itself does not approve a specific project; it’s the solicitation step for collecting responses so the City and CMSD can decide next steps later.
What the RFQ is seeking
The City’s Asset Redevelopment listing describes the RFQ as inviting professional real estate development teams to propose plans for redevelopment/reuse of the 12 surplus school sites. The RFQ also explains the broader context: CMSD’s Building Brighter Futures plan adopted in December 2025 includes closing these sites at the end of the 2025–2026 academic year, with the RFQ intended to support community benefit through redevelopment.
Deadline update: June 30 (4 PM EST) vs. July 20
The deadline change is the most time-sensitive part for any developer or community partner tracking the process:
- RFQ PDF (original): Responses were originally due June 30, 2026 at 4 PM EST.
- City’s current Asset Redevelopment listing (updated): Comprehensive responses are now due no later than July 20, 2026 (submitted electronically as a searchable PDF).
There is also an important process note for teams using the older timeline: the FAQ PDF was released June 12, 2026 and at that time said the City did not plan to extend the submission deadline beyond June 30. As of now, the City’s updated listing is the best place to confirm the current submission deadline.
June dates that already happened (but still matter for what you submit)
The RFQ set several June milestones for teams:
- Site visits: scheduled for June 10–June 19, 2026.
- Virtual information session (webinar): June 17, 2026 at 9:30 AM (hosted via Microsoft Teams).
- Webinar RSVP deadline: Friday, June 12, 2026.
Because today is June 28, those events have already occurred. However, the RFQ’s submission steps and requirements are still based on the official RFQ/FAQ documents.
LOI timing and where submissions go
The RFQ process includes an initial Letter of Interest (LOI) step followed by the larger response:
- LOIs due: June 5, 2026.
- RFQ response submissions: sent electronically to AssetRedevelopment@clevelandohio.gov in a searchable PDF format (with the updated deadline of no later than July 20, 2026).
How residents, relocators, and local businesses should think about this
When schools close, the question becomes: what happens to the buildings afterward—and how quickly neighborhoods can transition from vacancy to productive reuse. This RFQ is part of the pipeline for taking 12 former CMSD sites back into community planning, where redevelopment concepts could eventually intersect with zoning discussions, permitting timelines, and local contractor/vendor opportunities.
Practical next step: if you’re a resident/community partner who wants to stay informed, use the City’s Asset Redevelopment page to access the RFQ and FAQ PDFs and track what the City and CMSD do after the July 20 response window. For developers, community groups, and partner teams, the July 20 deadline is the key date to build around—while still following the formal instructions in the RFQ package.
