Cleveland Daily Local Headlines: Downtown venues, I-X Center farewell, and sports wins

Cleveland’s headlines today lean heavily toward big changes in how the city gathers for music, conventions, and sports.

Riverfront concerts: a new amphitheater enters the mix

Plans are moving ahead for a new 6,200-seat open-air amphitheater tied to the ongoing riverfront buildout near the arena district. The proposal adds another major promoter-backed stage downtown, a move supporters say could raise Cleveland’s profile for touring acts. Smaller venue operators, however, warn that more big-ticket inventory can siphon audiences and sponsorship dollars from the clubs that keep neighborhoods humming year-round.

The I-X Center’s consumer-show farewell

One of the region’s most recognizable event halls is preparing for its last big public goodbye. Organizers say the long-running Piston Powered Auto-Rama in late March will be the final consumer show held inside the I-X Center. For trade groups and vendors, the bigger question is what replaces that kind of flexible, giant-footprint space—and whether alternate venues can handle the same scale and scheduling needs.

Gateway District: Cosm’s dome clears a key approval

A separate downtown project also hit an important milestone: final architectural approval for an immersive sports-and-entertainment venue centered on a massive LED dome. The plan would fill a long-vacant site near East 4th Street and Huron, adding another all-weather destination aimed at game-day crowds and visitors looking for a high-tech viewing experience.

Sports quick hits

The Cavaliers snapped a brief skid with a road win in Brooklyn, with James Harden returning to the lineup and helping close out the final minutes. The Monsters also stayed hot at home, edging Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in overtime at Rocket Arena to keep pace near the top of the division.
