Climate Milestones, Rising Gas Prices and Proposed Tax Hikes Lead Buffalo Headlines
Buffalo, NY – March 13, 2026 – Erie County marks climate milestones as gas prices climb and Mayor Ryan proposes tax hikes for city residents.
It has been a busy week across Buffalo, with major updates on climate efforts, household costs and the city budget.
Erie County Marks Climate Progress
Erie County leaders gathered at Tifft Nature Preserve this week to celebrate two years of the Community Climate Action Plan. Officials say the plan has already helped secure millions in grant funding and expand local sustainability programs.
Among the reported accomplishments: more than 2,300 low-income households enrolled in community solar, new heat pumps installed in county buildings, a composting site launched at the Alden Correctional Facility and the creation of a tree salvage nursery through the Parks Department. County leaders say the work is designed to reduce emissions while saving taxpayer dollars and opening new job training opportunities.
Gas Prices Climb in Western New York
Drivers are also feeling pressure at the pump. According to AAA data reported this week, the average price of a gallon of gas in Buffalo has jumped sharply compared to last week, rising by nearly 40 cents.
Analysts point to global oil market instability as a key factor. Local economists say even regions that do not directly import oil from conflict areas can still feel the ripple effects through higher crude prices and distribution costs.
The increase adds another strain for households already managing rising food and utility bills.
Mayor Ryan Proposes Tax Increase
Meanwhile, Mayor Christopher Ryan’s proposed budget could mean higher monthly costs for city homeowners. Under the current plan, residents could see property taxes rise by an estimated 20 to 30 dollars per month.
City officials say the increase is aimed at stabilizing Buffalo’s finances amid uncertain revenue projections, including funds tied to a pending ramp sale and a gaming compact. Without those revenues, leaders warn the city could face renewed fiscal gaps in the upcoming year.
The proposal is expected to draw debate as the Common Council reviews the budget in the weeks ahead.
