Crash Investigation, City Budget Update and Sentencing Lead Reno Headlines
Reno, NV – March 8, 2026 – A multi-vehicle crash, a balanced city budget after a deficit, and a firefighter sentencing lead this weekend’s local headlines.
It’s been a busy few days across Reno, with public safety, city finances and the courts all making news.
Major Crash Under Investigation in North Reno
A multi-vehicle collision on Saturday, March 7 shut down portions of East Golden Valley Road near Pontiac Drive in north Reno. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office asked drivers to avoid the area as its Major Accident Investigation Team responded.
Lane closures were put in place while deputies worked to document the scene and determine what led to the crash. Officials have not yet released full details on injuries, but the investigation remains active.
Reno Council Balances $330M Budget
In a significant shift from earlier projections, the Reno City Council was presented this week with a balanced $330 million general fund budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
City leaders had previously faced a projected $24 million shortfall. After months of adjustments, including cost controls and financial restructuring, staff outlined a plan that closes the gap. Council members also discussed how redevelopment funds may factor into long-term stability.
The balanced proposal offers some relief following concerns about service cuts and structural deficits.
Reno Firefighter Sentenced in Reckless Driving Case
An off-duty Reno firefighter has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving causing substantial bodily harm in a 2025 crash in northwest Reno.
A judge ordered 24 to 60 months of probation with no jail time. The case stemmed from a collision in which the firefighter’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. Prosecutors and defense attorneys had argued for different outcomes, but the court ultimately opted for probation.
Jurassic Quest Draws Families to Reno
On a lighter note, Jurassic Quest is in town this weekend at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. The traveling dinosaur-themed experience runs March 6 through March 8 and features interactive exhibits and life-sized prehistoric creatures.
The family-friendly event has brought steady traffic to the venue as spring events begin picking up around the city.
