Dare County to consider financing for new Nags Head EMS station

Dare County commissioners are scheduled to consider authorizing an installment financing contract of up to $67 million for three county projects, including a new emergency medical services station serving Nags Head and surrounding areas.

The special meeting is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 10, 2026. The agenda item is a consideration of authorization for the financing contract, not a confirmation that the financing has been approved or that construction has started.

Three projects in one package

The proposed financing package combines the Nags Head-area EMS project with a public works facility in Manteo and an athletic field house at Manteo High School.

Dare County’s capital-project materials identify the EMS project as EMS Station 5 and associate it with Nags Head. The county meeting notice describes potential EMS-project costs that include acquisition, construction, equipment, site improvements, furnishings and related work.

The up-to-$67 million figure applies to the combined financing package. The meeting notice does not state how much would be assigned specifically to the EMS station, so the total should not be read as the cost of the Nags Head facility alone.

What the meeting would decide

If commissioners authorize the contract, the action would create a financing path for the county to move forward with the three projects. It would not, by itself, provide a construction schedule or establish when the EMS station would open.

The proposed station would add to the county’s emergency-services infrastructure for Nags Head and nearby areas. That makes the financing question relevant not only to the county’s capital plan but also to how emergency medical facilities are planned and equipped in the communities the station is intended to serve.

The package also places the EMS project alongside facilities serving other county functions: public works operations in Manteo and athletics at Manteo High School. Combining the projects in one financing request means the commissioners will consider the county’s broader capital needs in the same action as the proposed Nags Head station.

As of Aug. 9, the final financing terms and the outcome of the commissioners’ vote had not been announced. The county notice also does not identify the EMS station’s site, construction timetable or expected opening date. The Aug. 10 special meeting is the next scheduled step in the project’s consideration.
