Delphos residents fall under different county unemployment rates in June

Residents of Delphos can be represented by different county unemployment figures depending on which side of the Allen-Van Wert county line they live on. June data showed Van Wert County’s unemployment rate at 3.2%, compared with 3.8% in Allen County.

The figures were reported in July 2026 and are the latest data identified for this article. They provide a snapshot of labor-market conditions for residents, but they do not produce a single citywide unemployment rate for Delphos.

Van Wert County rate increased from May

Van Wert County’s unemployment rate rose from 2.5% in May to 3.2% in June, according to figures from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported by The VW Independent. Even after that one-month increase, the county’s June rate remained below Allen County’s 3.8% rate.

The June movement should be treated as a data point rather than proof of a sustained regional economic decline. County unemployment figures alone do not identify layoffs, business closures, hiring changes or the reasons a rate moved from one month to the next.

Allen County was slightly above Ohio’s rate

Ohio’s statewide unemployment rate was 3.6% in June, down from 3.7% in May in preliminary, seasonally adjusted federal data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on July 21, 2026. That placed Allen County slightly above the statewide comparison and Van Wert County below it.

The county and statewide figures are not identical measures. The statewide rate is seasonally adjusted, while county estimates are reported for smaller geographic areas and may be revised as additional information becomes available. The comparison is useful, but the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why Delphos does not have one rate in these figures

The City of Delphos says the community is divided east and west by the Van Wert-Allen County line. That means the county rate associated with a resident depends on the resident’s county of residence, even when that person lives within the same city.

This distinction matters because unemployment statistics are residence-based. They describe whether people who live in a county are working, looking for work or outside the labor force. They are not a direct count of jobs located inside Delphos, nor do they show how many people commute into or out of the city for work.

For residents, the most useful comparison is therefore to look at both county figures and the statewide rate while keeping their geographic and statistical differences in mind. Van Wert County’s June increase may become more meaningful if it continues in later releases, but a single month cannot establish that trend.

Future monthly reports will show whether the June gap between Allen and Van Wert counties narrows, widens or reverses. Those releases will provide a better basis for judging whether the latest movement was temporary or part of a longer labor-market pattern.
