Des Moines Daily Local Briefing
Des Moines, IA – February 21, 2026 – Arrest in holiday shooting, record-breaking snow snarls travel, and culture, sports and celebrations fill the weekend.
Arrest made in Valentine’s Day shooting
Des Moines police say they have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a Valentine’s Day shooting that injured three people at a party on East Army Post Road. The suspect faces multiple counts of attempted murder and several drug-related charges after officers executed a search warrant at his home. Investigators report recovering multiple handguns, including one believed to have been modified for automatic fire. Police say the victims, all young men, continue to recover as the investigation moves forward.
Record snow and dozens of crashes snarl travel
Central Iowa’s latest winter storm dumped nearly six inches of snow in Des Moines, breaking a daily snowfall record that had stood since 1919. Nearby suburbs such as Ankeny and Johnston reported even higher totals, and West Des Moines saw more than seven inches. The heavy, fast-falling snow and gusty winds left roads slick across the metro.
Des Moines police reported responding to more than 50 crashes and dozens of stalled vehicles between Thursday afternoon and early Friday morning. Authorities are urging drivers to slow down, give plows plenty of room and expect lingering icy spots through the weekend as temperatures fluctuate.
Winter storm warnings and commute impacts
A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service office in Des Moines remained in effect into Friday morning, covering Polk County and much of central Iowa. Forecasters warned that blowing and drifting snow could keep travel hazardous even after the heaviest bands moved out. Officials recommend checking state road condition tools before heading out and carrying emergency supplies in vehicles until conditions fully improve.
Wrestling week packs downtown and skywalks
The Iowa boys state wrestling tournament is once again drawing thousands of athletes, coaches and fans to Des Moines. The multi-day event at Casey’s Center brings a major boost to downtown hotels, restaurants and shops as communities from across the state converge on the city. Local powers such as Southeast Polk and other Class 3A contenders are expected to keep the atmosphere electric through the weekend semifinals and finals.
Kosovo independence celebration and cultural events
Diplomats and local leaders are gathering in downtown Des Moines to mark the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence. A reception at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates is highlighting the long-running partnership between Iowa and Kosovo, including sister-city ties and work with the Iowa National Guard. The event underscores Des Moines’ growing role in international and immigrant community connections.
Looking ahead: Lunar New Year at Jester Park
Families looking for something festive this weekend can head to Jester Park for a Chinese New Year celebration recognizing the Year of the Fire Horse. The free program is set to feature a traditional lion dance, kung fu demonstrations and an introduction to the Chinese zodiac, offering a cultural break after a rough winter commute.
