Downey Daily Brief: EV Charging Expansion and New Homelessness Funding
Downey, CA — February 6, 2026 — City leaders advanced a major EV charging project and secured new homelessness funding while planning efforts continue.
Fast-Charging EV Hub Approved
Downey is moving forward with a significant upgrade to its electric vehicle infrastructure. City Council approved plans this week for a fast-charging EV hub at the Civic Center, near the Downey Library and City Hall.
The project replaces older, slower chargers with modern fast-charging stations designed to reduce wait times and improve access for residents and visitors. Officials say the Civic Center was chosen because of its central location and steady daily use.
Construction is expected to begin later this spring, with work phased to limit disruption around the library, theater, and nearby government offices.
New Funding to Address Homelessness
Downey will receive just over $500,000 in new funding to address homelessness, following action by Los Angeles County leaders earlier this week. The money comes from Measure A, a voter-approved sales tax focused on homelessness services.
This marks the first time Downey will receive a dedicated, ongoing share of Measure A funding. City officials say the money can be used for outreach, interim housing partnerships, and local programs tailored to Downey’s needs.
The funding arrives as cities across the region look for more localized approaches to homelessness, rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
City Planning and Community Updates
Separately, the city continues its long-term General Plan update, which will guide growth and development through 2045. While no major votes occurred this week, staff continue outreach and community engagement efforts.
Residents are also encouraged to stay signed up for Downey Alerts, the city’s emergency notification system, especially as weather and infrastructure updates remain a seasonal concern.
What to Watch
Upcoming City Council meetings are expected to include additional discussion on infrastructure projects and budget planning as the city heads toward spring.
