Dangerous cold through Sunday

Elmira is under an extreme cold warning through Sunday afternoon, with wind chills expected to fall well below zero across Chemung County.

The National Weather Service says readings could feel as low as 20 to 35 degrees below zero at times, especially early Saturday and again overnight into Sunday. Gusty northwest winds up to 30 to 45 mph may cause blowing snow and isolated power issues.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, layer up with hats and face coverings, bring pets inside, and let faucets drip in drafty areas to avoid frozen pipes.

Aviators host Mountain Kings at LECOM

For those braving the cold, downtown Elmira will be buzzing tonight as the Elmira Aviators host the New Hampshire Mountain Kings at the LECOM Event Center.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., part of a busy February home slate that also includes Kids Winter Fest next weekend and concert nights later this month. Arena staff are promoting the venue as a family-friendly stop for affordable winter entertainment.

Fans heading to the game should plan for bitter conditions walking to and from parking, and allow extra time on potentially slick side streets.

Weekly kirtan offers a warm indoor retreat

On Elmira’s west side, residents gathered Friday evening at the Paranitya Narasimha Temple on West Church Street for the weekly Community Kirtan and Bhajan Night.

The in-person gathering runs most Fridays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., offering devotional music, chanting, and quiet reflection. Organizers emphasize that all are welcome, with no prior singing or meditation experience required.

With the extreme cold lingering, events like kirtan nights, indoor hockey at LECOM, and other indoor activities are giving Elmira residents a way to connect with neighbors without spending much time outdoors.

Looking ahead

The cold pattern is expected to ease slightly early next week, but temperatures will remain seasonable. City and county boards will resume regular meetings beginning Monday and Tuesday, and February community events are set to continue as planned unless weather forces changes.
