Fairburn schedules May 19 groundbreaking for $24 million public-safety complex

Fairburn has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for a new public-safety complex estimated to cost more than $24 million, a planned municipal investment in police and fire facilities for the city.

The City of Fairburn announced the project on May 6, 2026. The groundbreaking is scheduled for 10 a.m. on May 19, 2026.

The planned complex would cover about 40,000 square feet and bring several public-safety functions together in one development. The city says the project is intended to improve emergency-response capacity and access to property on West Broad Street and Virlyn B. Smith Road.

Police and fire facilities

The project plans call for a new Fairburn Police Department headquarters and a real-time crime center. The center would be part of the police facilities included in the complex and is intended to support public-safety operations.

The development also would include a new Fairburn Fire Department headquarters and Fire Station No. 22. The station is planned with three bays for fire apparatus and emergency-response operations.

Those facilities would place police and fire headquarters, along with the new station, within the same planned public-safety complex. The city’s description presents the development as a consolidated campus rather than a single-purpose building.

Shared space and access improvements

In addition to department headquarters and the fire station, the plans include a community conference room and a gym for fire and police personnel. The shared spaces are part of the complex’s planned layout.

The project also includes improved access to property on West Broad Street and Virlyn B. Smith Road. That access work is identified as part of the city’s plans for the development, alongside the police and fire facilities.

For residents, the planned complex could bring a new fire station, a dedicated real-time crime center and additional space for city police and fire operations. Those benefits remain tied to construction and the eventual opening of the facilities.
