Fargo, ND — January 31, 2026 — A man was seriously injured in a stabbing early Saturday morning at the Bismarck Tavern in the 500 block of Broadway North. The altercation occurred just before 12:15 a.m., leading to the victim being transported to a hospital. A person of interest has been detained, and the investigation is ongoing.
I-29 Reopens with Travel Advisory
Fargo, ND — January 31, 2026 — Interstate 29 between Fargo and Grand Forks reopened at 5 p.m. today, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol. However, officials said a Travel Advisory remains in effect for this stretch due to scattered drifts. The section of I-29 from Grand Forks north to the Canadian border continues to be closed. Several counties in eastern North Dakota are still under Travel Alerts or No Travel Advisories. Rural Mainstreet Index Above Growth Neutral
Fargo, ND — January 31, 2026 — The Rural Mainstreet Index climbed above a growth-neutral score of 50.0 for January. That’s according to the latest monthly survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a ten-state region. The January index was at 52.0, its highest reading since July 2023, and up from December’s 50.1. However, more than one in three bankers, or 34.7 percent, indicated that their local economy was currently in a recession. Another 27 percent expect their local economy to experience recession conditions in the first half of 2026.
Vehicle Rollover on I-29 North of Fargo
Fargo, ND — January 31, 2026 — A vehicle rollover occurred on southbound I-29 just south of the County Road 20 exit, north of Fargo. The vehicle ended up on its roof in the west ditch, causing a traffic backup. Interstate speeds have been reduced to about 40 miles per hour in and around the Fargo-Moorhead metro area due to slippery conditions. Multiple reports of cars sliding off the roadways have been received. Roads in town are also slick, especially at intersections and on and off-ramps. A crash was reported at 45th Street and 40th Avenue South in Fargo around 8 AM, causing traffic delays.
Influenza Activity Remains High in North Dakota
Fargo, ND — January 31, 2026 — North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) is encouraging residents to take precautions as influenza activity remains high, with newly reported influenza-associated hospitalizations and deaths. This season, 5,166 influenza cases have been reported to HHS, according to the state agency. Of those, 1,481 cases have been in children younger than age 10. Across all age groups, there have been 383 hospitalizations for influenza and five influenza-associated deaths. Three of the deaths that occurred were adults, and two were children younger than 10.
