Fort Dodge’s $9 Million Reinvestment Plan Sets Next Steps for Downtown Streets, Pedestrian Mall and Pocket Park
Fort Dodge has a documented $9 million plan for downtown infrastructure and public-space improvements, including new or improved streets, sidewalks and lighting on South 11th Street, a pedestrian mall and a pocket park at 710 Central.
The Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Fort Dodge District Plan Amendment, dated March 12, 2026, identifies the projects as planned uses of reinvestment-district funds. The document sets out the funding and a public-involvement timeline, but it does not establish that every project has entered construction.
What the plan includes
The largest portion is $7 million for infrastructure installation on South 11th Street. The listed work includes streets, sidewalks and lights, improvements that could affect how people walk, drive and access downtown properties while work is underway and after the projects are completed.
The plan also lists $1 million for construction of a pocket park at 710 Central and another $1 million for construction of a pedestrian mall. Together, those public-space projects represent $2 million of the planned package.
The funding table lists $8.6 million in IRA funds and a $400,000 contribution from the City of Fort Dodge. Those amounts total the plan’s stated $9 million use of funds.
Public meetings and next steps
The plan’s community-involvement timeline calls for public meetings or an open house during June through August 2026. It then calls for a Fort Dodge City Council update during September through December 2026.
The approved packet does not identify the exact date or content of any August meeting. Residents, downtown workers, property owners and businesses should therefore treat the timeline as a schedule for planned public involvement, not as confirmation that a particular meeting has been finalized.
The plan identifies the City of Fort Dodge and the Fort Dodge reinvestment district as central to the project. The listed locations—710 Central and South 11th Street—place the documented work in the city’s downtown area, where construction and eventual public-space changes could affect access and day-to-day activity.
Separate city priorities
A June 2 report from The Messenger said the city was continuing to plan for a new law-enforcement center and replacement of the North Third Street bridge. Those projects were described as separate city priorities and are not included in the $9 million reinvestment-district package described here.
For now, the IEDA document provides a plan, funding breakdown and implementation timeline. It does not show that the full $9 million has been spent or that construction is complete.
