As February rolls along, Freeport heads into a busy weekend of fundraisers, games, and chances to get out in the community.

Valentine weekend events around town

Valentine themed gatherings are popping up across the city today. A chili fundraiser on South Walnut Avenue is inviting families to share a meal while supporting services for local mothers and babies later this evening.

Downtown, a Galentine themed craft morning at a Chicago Avenue event space is bringing together local makers and friends for do it yourself projects, shopping, and coffee. Over on West Stephenson Street, a community health symposium is focusing on blood pressure, diabetes, and wellness resources, with local health partners offering screenings and information.

Families can also stop by the public library on East Douglas for a family friendly potluck with kids crafts, music, and shared dishes, or head to a Riverside Drive game shop for an afternoon Pokémon card challenge and an evening Disney Lorcana co op event.

Prep sports: Pretzels edge Boylan

On the court Friday night, Freeport High School’s boys basketball team pulled out a tight win over Boylan, 79–76, in statewide action. The victory adds a quality result to the Pretzels’ resume as the schedule heads toward the stretch run and gives local fans something to cheer about heading into the weekend.

Market and community life

The Stephenson County Farmers Market is in its winter season, operating indoors at the Farm Bureau building on West Spring Street every second and fourth Saturday through April. Organizers say the off season market continues to feature locally grown produce, eggs, meat, baked goods, and handmade items, giving residents a way to keep shopping small even in the colder months.

With about 24,000 residents, Freeport continues to live up to its Pretzel City nickname, balancing its manufacturing roots with a steady stream of cultural events, youth sports, and downtown gatherings.
