Fremont Daily Brief: Police Investigation, Freeway Delays, and Street Work Updates
Fremont, CA — February 6, 2026 — Police investigate a fatal shooting, drivers face I-680 delays, and Centerville street work continues across the city.
Police investigate fatal shooting
Fremont police are continuing to investigate a deadly shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon near Central Avenue and Joseph Street. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 4:20 p.m. and found a victim with critical injuries. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, the individual died.
Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and no arrests have been announced. Investigators say the case remains active as detectives work to determine what led up to the shooting. Residents in the area may notice an increased police presence as the investigation continues.
I-680 traffic disruptions frustrate commuters
Drivers traveling through Fremont experienced significant slowdowns this week after emergency pothole repairs forced lane closures on northbound Interstate 680 near North Mission Boulevard. Caltrans crews shut down multiple lanes for several hours, backing up traffic during the afternoon and evening commute.
Although the damaged section of roadway has since been repaired and lanes reopened, transportation officials are urging motorists to stay alert for additional short-term closures as crews monitor conditions. Detours routed traffic toward Mission Boulevard, I-238, and I-880 during the worst of the delays.
Centerville street construction moves forward
Construction is ongoing along Fremont Boulevard in the Centerville district as part of the city’s Complete Streets project. The current phase includes a 24-hour closure of an outside eastbound lane between Thornton Avenue and Bonde Way, with additional daytime lane reductions possible.
City officials say the work is aimed at improving safety with upgraded sidewalks, bike lanes, and repaved road surfaces. Moderate delays are expected during weekday work hours, and drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage or consider alternate routes.
What to keep in mind
Residents are encouraged to remain patient as investigations and infrastructure projects move forward. City officials note that while these disruptions can be inconvenient, they are part of broader efforts to improve safety and long-term mobility across Fremont.
