New Police Chief Takes Office March 9
Fremont’s incoming police chief, Floyd Mitchell, will officially step into the role on Monday, March 9. City leaders confirmed his appointment earlier this week after completing a nationwide search process.
Mitchell brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience to the position. He previously led a major Bay Area department and is expected to guide Fremont’s Police Department through its next chapter.
City officials say they are focused on steady leadership and continued collaboration with the community. An interim chief will remain in place through the weekend before Mitchell formally assumes command.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-880
A deadly crash early Tuesday morning, March 3, shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 880 near the Decoto Road off-ramp.
The multi-vehicle collision left one person dead. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and authorities temporarily closed lanes while investigators worked and the Alameda County Coroner conducted an on-site response.
All lanes reopened at approximately 5:40 a.m., restoring normal traffic flow for the morning commute. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. Officials say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Upcoming City Service Adjustments
In a community bulletin released March 6, the City of Fremont outlined several upcoming service updates and reminders for residents.
The Fremont Police Department lobby will be closed on Monday, March 23, for staff training. Modified hours are planned later that week. Residents who need in-person services are encouraged to plan ahead.
City officials are also preparing for a public event at the Fremont Veterans’ Memorial Building later this month. Additional details are expected through official city communication channels.
Residents are advised to review city updates before visiting public facilities to avoid inconvenience and ensure services are available.
