Georgetown Water Maintenance Runs Through Sept. 3
Georgetown’s annual water-system maintenance is underway, with the Georgetown Water Utility scheduled to continue its systemwide chlorine rinse through Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.
The work began Monday, Aug. 3. During the maintenance period, customers may notice a chlorine odor or see a green or brown tint in their water for brief periods. The city describes those changes as possible temporary effects while the system is being rinsed.
For Georgetown residents and businesses, the practical change is that water may look or smell different at times during the monthlong maintenance window. The city has not indicated that every customer will experience those effects, and the timing may vary by location.
Why the maintenance moved to August
The City of Georgetown moved its annual maintenance into August to coordinate with neighboring utilities conducting similar rinses during the same period. The announcement says the shared timing is intended to reduce customer confusion and help preserve interoperability among nearby water systems.
Four neighboring utilities named in the announcement are also scheduled to conduct comparable rinses between Aug. 3 and Sept. 3: Round Rock, Leander, Cedar Park and Liberty Hill.
Coordinating the work gives customers in the region a common maintenance window rather than separate schedules spread across different parts of the year. It also allows the utilities to align work affecting connected or nearby systems during the same period.
What Georgetown customers should expect
The city’s public notice identifies chlorine odors and brief green or brown water discoloration as the main changes customers may observe. The notice does not provide a more detailed day-by-day schedule for individual Georgetown areas, so customers may not be able to know in advance exactly when maintenance will be noticeable at a particular address.
The maintenance remains scheduled work rather than a completed project. The current window runs from Aug. 3 through Sept. 3, and the public announcement does not list an earlier completion date.
The City of Georgetown published its announcement July 2, giving customers advance notice before the work began. That timing also established the Aug. 3 start and Sept. 3 end dates for the coordinated regional maintenance period.
Water board meeting is scheduled Aug. 13
Georgetown’s Water Utility Advisory Board is scheduled to hold its next regular meeting Aug. 13, 2026, at the Westside Service Center.
The board oversees water and wastewater resource planning, construction, operations and finance. Its meeting provides a city forum for questions or follow-up about water-system operations while the annual maintenance is in progress.
For now, Georgetown customers should expect the possibility of a temporary chlorine smell or green and brown water tint during the Aug. 3-Sept. 3 maintenance period. The work is part of the city’s annual systemwide rinse and is being conducted on the same schedule as comparable maintenance by four nearby utilities.
