Gilbert, AZ – February 25, 2026 – Police probe a break-in shooting, services honor a fallen trooper-paramedic, and the town spotlights engineers.

Local Headlines for Wednesday

Here are the biggest Gilbert-area updates making the rounds over the past few days, led by a serious early-morning incident near the Loop 202.

Break-in ends in shooting at apartment near Loop 202

Police say a suspected intruder is hospitalized in critical condition after a resident shot him during an alleged break-in at an apartment near S. San Tan Village Parkway and the Loop 202. Investigators say the suspect forced his way inside around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, and the caller reported an assault before the resident fired.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive, and the investigation was still active as of this week. Residents in the area may notice extra patrols as detectives work to piece together what happened.

Gilbert services honor trooper-paramedic killed in helicopter crash

Gilbert also hosted services for Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper-paramedic Hunter Bennett, who died in a Feb. 4 helicopter crash in Flagstaff while on duty. The funeral was held Monday at Mission Church in Gilbert, with a livestream available for those unable to attend in person.

The loss has drawn an outpouring of support across the East Valley, with many residents noting Bennett’s rapid rise in public safety roles and his work in air rescue operations.

Town spotlights engineers behind roads, water, and public spaces

On the civic side, Gilbert marked National Engineers Week (Feb. 22–28) with a spotlight on the people who design, inspect, and deliver local infrastructure. Town leaders framed the week as a reminder that everything from clean drinking water to safer intersections depends on long-term planning and day-to-day technical work that rarely makes headlines.

With several large projects and long-range water planning continuing to shape local conversations, the town’s message was simple: a lot of what keeps Gilbert running is built, maintained, and upgraded quietly in the background.
