City updates

Green starts the weekend with a quiet but meaningful city update focused on honoring local veterans and keeping neighbors informed.

The city is inviting families to purchase personalized banners and other commemorative items that will hang in Veterans Memorial Park from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. The displays are meant to recognize veterans with ties to Green and will remain available to order through the spring, giving residents plenty of time to participate.

Schools & community

Over at Green Local Schools, attention is already on a major community fundraiser at the end of the month. The Green Schools Foundation’s “Battle of the Slice” is set for Saturday, February 28, turning the Green Middle School and the attached CORE facility into a citywide pizza tasting and family fun night. Proceeds will support scholarships, classroom grants, and student programs across the district.

The event will spread across multiple spaces, with local pizza vendors serving in the main cafeteria, games and inflatables in the middle school gym, business and community booths in the CORE gym, and sports clinics running on the indoor turf. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time, so families who want to attend are being encouraged to plan now.

This weekend is already busy for students, with wrestling, basketball, and other winter sports on the schedule, along with rehearsals and club meetings at the middle and high schools. Calendars show Green teams on the road and at home through Saturday morning, keeping the Bulldogs’ new facilities well used even in the heart of February.

At The CORE

The city’s newer recreation hub, The CORE on Steese Road, continues to play a growing role in community life. Built alongside the new Green Middle School, the 53,000-square-foot facility offers basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor turf field, an elevated walking track, studio spaces for classes, and meeting rooms that can host civic and neighborhood events.

Regular hours run from early morning through most evenings, with weekend daytime access for drop-in play, leagues, and fitness programs. Residents are using the building for everything from youth practices to senior activities, and the city is layering in special events like the upcoming pizza fundraiser to make sure the space serves all ages.

Between the park tributes, a full school calendar, and an active recreation center, Green heads into this first weekend of February with a steady mix of remembrance, community building, and simple winter fun.
