Gurnee Daily: Autism Support, Camera Changes, and Jobs at Six Flags
Gurnee, IL — February 7, 2026 — Police launch autism support program, red-light cameras wind down, and Six Flags ramps up hiring ahead of spring.
Good morning, Gurnee. Here is a quick look at what is happening around town today.
Police launch Blue Envelope autism support program
Gurnee police have introduced a new Blue Envelope Program to make encounters safer and less stressful for people on the autism spectrum. Participants can keep identification, registration and communication notes in a blue envelope to hand officers during traffic stops or other contacts, helping everyone slow down, understand needs and avoid misunderstandings. The program is voluntary, free and open to anyone on the spectrum who lives, works or regularly spends time in Gurnee.
Red light cameras turned off after 16 years
The village has officially ended its red light camera program after reviewing both its safety benefits and ongoing technical problems. Officials say crashes fell roughly one third in the years after cameras were first installed, but recent vendor issues, maintenance delays and construction work reduced their effectiveness. No new violations have been issued since last summer, though outstanding tickets still must be paid, and the remaining camera equipment is expected to be removed later this year.
Six Flags Great America hiring more than 3,000 workers
Six Flags Great America is gearing up for its 50th anniversary season and plans to hire over 3,000 employees for the 2026 season. Jobs range from ride operations and food service to lifeguards, entertainment, security and medical staff. Most positions start around fifteen dollars an hour, with some reaching nineteen dollars, and include perks such as free park admission and discounts. A large in person hiring event is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, from late morning to mid afternoon at the park, and applicants are encouraged to apply online before attending.
On the local calendar
Looking ahead to next week, a Legislative Breakfast in Gurnee on February 11 will bring together lawmakers, business leaders and community partners for a discussion on policy and economic issues affecting Lake County. It is a chance for residents and employers to hear directly from decision makers close to home.
All weekend long, the Chicago Valentines Craft and Vendor Market continues at Gurnee Mills, featuring local makers, small businesses and plenty of gift ideas. The event runs through Sunday with extended daytime hours, giving shoppers lots of time to browse.
