Hardin’s $2.75 Million Tourism Grant Advances Depot Renovation and Visitor-Center Plans

Hardin’s historic train depot is moving forward as the planned site of a visitor center supported by a five-year, $2.75 million Pilot Tourism Grant awarded to the city by the Montana Department of Commerce in 2025.

The project was highlighted June 19, 2026, when Gov. Greg Gianforte met with Hardin leaders at the depot during a tour of rural Montana communities. The governor’s office presented the project as part of broader investment and community development in Hardin.

A visitor center at the historic depot

The grant will support updates to the historic Hardin Train Depot and its planned conversion into a visitor center. The proposed facility is intended to help travelers discover businesses, attractions and cultural sites in and around Hardin.

That role would give visitors a central place to learn about the community and plan local stops. It also could help direct tourism traffic toward Hardin-area businesses and cultural destinations rather than leaving travelers without a clear connection to the community.

For Hardin residents, the project creates the prospect of a new visitor-facing facility at an existing historic site. For local businesses and attractions, the center is intended to provide another way for travelers to find them. The five-year grant term gives the city a multiyear funding commitment for carrying out the project rather than a single short-term award.

State officials highlighted the investment

Gianforte’s June visit placed the depot project within a broader state tour focused on innovation and investment in rural communities. The governor’s office said the tour included all 56 Montana counties and described Hardin’s depot plans as an example of community development.

The grant itself remains focused on tourism improvements at the Hardin depot. The City of Hardin and the Montana Department of Commerce are the local and state entities connected to the project, which is located in Big Horn County.

The governor’s announcement did not provide a construction start date, completion date, detailed spending schedule or final design for the renovated depot. It also did not establish how many jobs the project will create or how many visitors the center may attract.

The known timeline begins with the 2025 grant award and continues through its five-year term. The June 19, 2026 visit brought renewed public attention to the plans, but the next practical steps will be the project’s implementation and further updates about construction, design and operations.
