Hastings Daily Brief: Safety, Warm Weather, and Hoops Highlights
Hastings, NE — February 7, 2026 — Police log highlights an assault, forecasters flag river ice-jam risks, and Hastings College hoops cap a busy week.
Public safety: police log from Feb. 5
Hastings police released their Thursday activity report, noting two significant incidents. Officers received a report of an assault on North Marian Road involving a 46 year old resident, and a separate hit and run was reported on North Burlington Avenue by a 54 year old resident. No additional details on injuries or arrests in those cases have been made public, but both reports remain under investigation.
On Friday morning, officers also arrested a 28 year old Hastings resident on an outstanding Adams County warrant in the 400 block of North Colorado Avenue. Police continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activity quickly so investigators have the best chance of following up on new leads.
Weather: warm spell and river ice concerns
Forecasters at the Hastings weather office say south central Nebraska will continue to see well above normal temperatures through at least Monday. The mild stretch is welcome for many after a long winter, but the quick thaw is increasing melt on area rivers, including reaches of the Platte and Loup systems near the region.
The main concern is the potential for localized ice jams, which can cause water levels to rise and fall several feet in a short time. Residents who live or travel near rivers are being asked to watch for rapid changes in water level or chunks of moving ice and to report any flooding to forecasters so warnings can be issued if needed.
Sports: Hastings College teams roll at home
College basketball brought extra traffic to town this week as Hastings College hosted Midland in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. In the women s matchup at Lynn Farrell Arena, the Broncos controlled the game from the opening minutes and pulled away in the second half, winning by more than forty points and extending their long winning streak in the series.
The men s game followed a similar script, with Hastings jumping out to an early double digit lead in the first half. Midland cut the margin at times, but the Broncos continued to shoot efficiently and closed out a comfortable home win. The results keep Hastings firmly in the conference mix as the regular season enters its final month.
Weekend outlook
With quieter weather expected and home teams riding some momentum, the weekend ahead looks busy around town. A fitness competition, watch parties for the pro football championship, and trivia nights at local breweries are all on the calendar, giving residents plenty of options to get out, support local businesses, and enjoy the unseasonably warm stretch.(allevents.in)
