Hawthorne airport hangar project approved, with work phased through late 2028

Hawthorne has approved a redevelopment project at Hawthorne Municipal Airport that calls for 13 new aircraft hangars, demolition of existing buildings, pavement changes and airfield safety improvements.

The project is approved, but the available public records do not establish that all 13 hangars or related improvements have been completed. The environmental filing describes phased construction beginning in June 2025 and extending through late 2028; it does not document a new construction milestone specifically on August 5, 2026.

What the project includes

The City of Hawthorne is identified as the project’s lead and approving agency. The proposed hangars would be built at four designated sites within Hawthorne Municipal Airport, also known as Jack Northrop Field, at 12101 S. Crenshaw Blvd.

The hangars are listed at sizes ranging from about 2,500 square feet to 25,300 square feet. The project description includes fire-suppression systems, energy-efficient lighting and seismic reinforcements.

The plan also calls for demolishing six existing buildings totaling 18,000 square feet. About 55,000 square feet of impervious surface would be removed and replaced with new pavement, along with airfield safety enhancements.

Approval and current status

Hawthorne approved the project on January 30, 2026. California’s environmental filing was received and posted on February 20, 2026, under the state environmental review system.

The filing says a Mitigated Negative Declaration was prepared, mitigation measures were made conditions of approval and a mitigation monitoring or reporting plan was adopted. The record therefore documents an approved project subject to mitigation requirements; it does not establish that every planned element has been built or is operating.

The construction schedule is described as phased from June 2025 through late 2028. That schedule does not, by itself, confirm that each phase has started, that all six buildings have been demolished or that any particular hangar is complete.

What it means for airport users and neighbors

Hawthorne Municipal Airport is an active, city-owned general-aviation airport operating near the 405 and 105 freeways. The city’s airport information identifies 24-hour operations, an FAA-operated control tower and public resources for aircraft noise and airport contacts.

For residents, nearby businesses and airport users, the practical effects will depend on when individual phases begin and whether the city issues notices about demolition, paving, access or airfield work. The current records support the project’s scope and approval, but not a claim that the full redevelopment is underway or finished.

Separate airport improvement work

The city has also documented a separate 2026 capital-improvement action involving taxiway and runway-lighting rehabilitation. That bid notice concerns distinct airport work and should not be counted as part of the 13-hangar project unless a later city record explicitly connects the efforts.

The clearest status as of August 5, 2026, is that Hawthorne has an approved, phased airport hangar redevelopment project with a schedule extending into late 2028. Future city notices, airport updates and project records will be needed to confirm actual construction milestones and completed work.
