Heavy Rains Soak Oahu, Lawmakers Eye Special Funds, Cultural Events Fill Weekend Calendar
Honolulu, HI – March 9, 2026 – Heavy rains drench Oahu, lawmakers review state funds, and cultural festivals draw crowds across the city.
Honolulu is heading into a new week with soggy ground, budget scrutiny at the Capitol and a busy calendar of cultural events.
Heavy Rainfall Hits Parts of Oahu
Over the weekend, portions of Oahu saw intense rainfall, with some windward and mauka areas reporting double-digit totals within hours. Local weather updates highlighted significant downpours in Luluku, Moanalua and Poamoho, prompting concerns about runoff and localized flooding.
While conditions began stabilizing by Sunday evening, forecasters say breezy trade winds are continuing and residents in flood-prone areas should remain cautious as saturated ground can increase the risk of minor flooding and rockfalls.
Lawmakers Review Hundreds of Special Funds
At the State Capitol, lawmakers are examining more than 200 special funds held across state agencies as they weigh options to address ongoing budget pressures. A Senate bill under discussion would redirect excess balances from certain accounts to help cover general expenses.
The proposal comes as officials navigate a challenging fiscal environment, with debates continuing over spending priorities and potential impacts on services. The review process is expected to continue through the legislative session.
Cultural Events and Festivals Draw Crowds
Despite the unsettled weather, Honolulu’s event calendar remained active. The annual Kualoa and Hakipuʻu Canoe Festival over the weekend invited residents to experience Polynesian voyaging traditions, paddling demonstrations and educational exhibits.
Arts and entertainment offerings across Chinatown and Waikiki also brought steady foot traffic, with comedy showcases, gallery openings and live performances filling venues from Friday through Sunday.
Looking ahead, organizers are preparing for larger March events, including the upcoming Honolulu Festival, which will feature cultural performances and its signature fireworks display over Waikiki Beach later this month.
